                Abstract

                Assessment students’ criticallythinking becomes crucial issue especially for writing hortatory exposition text which required students todemonstrate argument appropriately using constructed response items. The Purpose of this research is to describe how the constructed-response item implemented in authentic assessment of writing exposition text to promote students higher order thinking and to identify the strengths and the weaknesses of it. The researcher used qualitative research design. The data is obtained from observation checklist, field notes, interview and documentation.Subject of this research is teacher and students in SMAN 1 Tarik on eleven grade of selective class IPS. The findings of this study revealed that majority students’ response in create an argument had been answered higher order thinking have high percentage (60%), whereas only few lower order thinking percentage (11%), and the rest percentages for medium students level (29%). The researcher discovered this implementation has strength and the weaknesses. The strength of the implementation is teacher advanced the assessing in learning process to be better. It is showed that students have to thinkcritically to create a judgment,and apply the material with the real life. On the other hand there are some weaknesses that occurred such as; time consuming, teacher should translate students’ response first in English, and students spent much energy to response and thinking the material.
