Abstract
This research is aimed at finding American Dream concept in “Winter Dreams”. American dream is a dream to get better life and to be successful person who is hard worker, never gives up, and has positive thinking.“Winter Dreams” is short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald as a tragic example of both sides of the American Dream. The researcher uses two main theories to found the research questions. The first theory, this research uses elements of literature to analyze Dexter Green’s conflict. The second theory, this research uses six elements American Dreams to analyze how Dexter Green resolves the conflicts. This is a qualitative research. The researcher found two results in this research. The first result, some conflicts included internal conflict of Dexter and external conflict of Dexter. In internal conflict, Dexter have two conflicts about wealth and Dexter’s feeling. In external conflict, Dexter have conflicts with Another man, society, and nature. The second result, some conflicts of Dexter can be solved with the spirit of the American Dream. From the six elements of American Dream, the researcher only found four of American Dreams such as The American Dream of Good Life (II): Upward Mobility, King of America: The Dream of Equality, The Dream of The Good Life (III): The Coast, and The Dream of Home Ownership.
