Abstract

This research analyzes about cohesion found in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC CEO Summit 2014. The objectives are to identify the kinds and functions of cohesive devices used in Joko Widodo’s speech. To conduct this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method, because the data are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The data source of this research is the transcript of Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC CEO Summit 2014. The data are analyzed based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory and Paltridge’s theory about cohesion. The result of this research shows that cohesion; grammatical and lexical are both used in the speech. In the level of grammatical cohesion, the researcher has identified the use of reference, ellipsis, and conjunction without any substitution. References in the speech are used to refer to relevant persons and objects, location of a process in space or time, and to express the likeness between things. Then, nominal ellipsis is used to omit the similar noun which has been stated in the previous sentence. Afterwards, conjunctions are used to indicate an additional of a fact or idea, contrast, cause and effect relationship, and to show time order. On the other hand, both of lexical cohesive devices: reiteration and collocation are used by the speaker. Reiteration in the speech are to reiterate the previous item by using repetition, synonym, antonym, and hyponym. Then, collocation is used to indicate co-occurrence of words in which their meaning related in the same environment. Keyword: Cohesion, Joko Widodo’s speech, APEC CEO Summit 2014
