Abstract

This research is conducted in order to improve students’ reading skill at eighth grade students of SMP Al-IslamKrian through KWL strategy. This research is related to the result of observation showed that the studentsskill to comprehend the reading text was lack. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is conducted to solve the students’ problem in English reading. The Classroom Action Research (CAR) was done based on the Kemmis and Mc Taggard’s theory. The researcher did two cycles in which each cycle consist of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were gathered through qualitative data.The objectives of this research are to describe: (1)the implementation of the KWL strategy in reading class to eighth grade students of SMP Al-IslamKrian; (2) the students’ improvement in reading comprehension skill after having a class with the KWL strategy to the eighth grade students of SMP Al-Islam.The finding of this research indicated the implementation of KWL technique was successfull since the criteria of success were achieved. The first criterion was the students who become more active involved in teaching and learning process. The second criterion was ≥ 75%students could pass the target 70 based on the KKM. Besides, the third criterion was ≥ 80% students agree with the implementation of KWL strategy.The result of this research showed that the teaching learning process after implementation of KWL chartthe students were active involved in the classroom. Based on the finding mentioned before, the researcher suggest that the English teacher could implement KWL strategy in teaching reading in order to motivate students in learning English reading.
