Abstract

The common perception of Indonesians is that they are unable to speak fluently and communicate effectively in the English language. The research is investigating by the following research questions; (1). What are the mispronunciations in English oral communications among English department undergraduates at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya? (2). What are the type of mispronunciations contributing to the mispronunciations in English oral communication among English department undergraduates at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya? (3). Why the mispronunciations in English oral reading among English department undergraduates at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya has been made?. The reason from researcher which to classifying the type of mispronunciations and determine the linguistics factors in English oral reading among Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. The theoretical framework of the research are related pronunciation, mispronunciation types, phonology, speaking, and phonetic symbol. The research design was a descriptive qualitative methods. The subject of research are Eighth semester students of English department and setting of the research at Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. Instrument of this research study are collecting the data using observation, recording and interviews. The researcher analyzed the data descriptively start from classifying the kind of mispronunciation and describing the linguistic factors. The result of analysis was found that evidence of mispronunciations are new vocabulary, stutter, slip of tongue was made by nervous and linguistic factor like social background and reading difficulties.
