                Abstract

                This research aimed to improve student’s reading skill of tenth grade in SMA Hangtuah 1 at Surabaya. Based on the observation result at a glance, many students have reading skill below standard. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was applied as research design. Based on Susanto’s theory that has done in one cycle. The cycle is consisting of plan, do and see. Quantitative and qualitative method was applied as research method. The objectives of this research are: (1) describe implementation by using reader response approach in teaching reading in SMA Hangtuah 4; (2) describe the improvement of students’ ability of reading skill by using reader response approach. The two criteria was applied as indicator of success, those are the student score ≥75% of writing response and ≥75% of reading response map where score 75 was the KKM or Student standard score. The result showed that implementation reader response approach in teaching reading could be started in making lesson plan, second is prepared the exercises those are writing response and reading response map. It also showed that reader response approach can be applied in teaching reading to improve the student skill.Even though, the use of reader response approach could increase the student motivation but the students must improve their English basic skill first if reader response used in learning activity. Learning process can be used by the teacher in teaching reading using reader response, regarded to the observation scaled that teacher completed Key words: Classroom Action Research (CAR), Reader response approach
