Abstract

Solubility is the most critical factor affecting the successful of pharmaceutical manufacturing process. Active pharmaceutical ingredients with low solubility in water pose a challenge to the development of pharmaceutical dosage forms. A possible method to overcome the solubility problem of active pharmaceutical ingredients is micellar solubilization. Micelles have the capacity to effectively increase water solubility. The micellar solubilization method can be carried out through the dissolution of active ingredients in the hydrophobic micelle core as well as interaction with polar groups or incorporation of polar or nonpolar micelle interfaces. The misellar solubilization method can make it easier for formulators to make pharmaceutical preparations in the form of solutions, especially for soluble or highly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients in water with the help of surfactants. Experimental results in several studies show that the use of the micellar solubilization method by adding several types of micelles including PEG-PPG-PEG, PEG- PBCL, CMC, UCR, CR, AOT and NaDPPG is proven to increase the solubility of active pharmaceutical ingredients efficiently.
