Abstract

Talking with others, people tend to change the way they speech to the other person. This is called speech accommodation. In district Taman Sidoarjo, there are many migrant communities coming from different regions. Some of them come from Kalimantan, Jakarta, Bandung, Madura, Sumatera and Papua. They bring their own culture as well as their language. This study aims to reveal how migrant communities accommodate their speech to people living in Taman Sidoarjo. Furthermore, this study aims to the language attitude ofmigrant communities using speech accommodation. The theory used is Speech Accommodation Theory (SAT) Giles (1984) and Holmes (2008). This research used qualitative method was explained descriptively. Data collection techniques used questionnaires distributed to residents of migrant communities in the sub-district of Taman Sidoarjo. The object of his research is the language used by migrants outside Surabaya in speaking in everyday life. The results of the study show that the immigration community changed (converge) their native language because they know the new language where they live in and more easily communicate with the surrounding community Keywords: Migrant communities; SAT; Speech accommodation; Surabaya Javanese variety
