Abstract

The purposes of this research was to analyze the effectiveness of the combination of two strategies Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) and Numbered Head Together (NHT)In students reading comprehension of recount text in eight grades students of SMP Muhammadiyah 17 Surabaya in academic years of 2016-2017 and their responses in applying the strategy. This research is a quantitative method using true experimental consist of pre and post test control group design. The subject was eight grades (8C and 8D) of SMP Muhammadiyah 17 Surabaya that located on Jl.Gogor Kali IV/6-8 Surabaya which consists of 54 students. Given the treatment of DRTA through NHT strategy for experimental class and conventional strategy for the control class. The instruments of the test was 25 multiple choices of reading comprehension of recount text and giving the 12 items of the questioner to know the appropriateness of the strategy. Then conducted the T-test analyze from SPSS software version 21 to know the effectiveness of DRTA through NHT strategy. From the result of T-test (independent and paired sample test) independent sample test result was 0.002 <0.05 then paired sample test was 0.000<0.05. It is indicated that there was statistically difference between class before and after giving treatment.Then the result of questioner indicated that more than 50% respondents given positive responses (Agree and Strongly Agree). It can be concluded that the DRTA through NHT is effective and appropriate strategy to improve students reading comprehension.
