Abstract

Key Words: Advertisement, Sentence meaning, Intended meaning One form of communication that develops is advertisements. Advertisements can be found in printed or electronic media. This research uses Her World magazine to be the source of data. This research is aimed in analyzing expressions in cosmetic advertisements. According to the background of the research, it is conducted to answer the research problems; those are 1.2.1 What are the sentence meaning, 1.2.2 What are the intended meaning found in the cosmetic advertisements, and 1.2.3 What are the effect of advertisements to the readers. This research used qualitative approaches, because the data are in the form of words or sentences from cosmetic advertisements. The data are taken from five advertisements of five different cosmetic products that are published in Her World magazine, March 2013 edition. Moreover, this research also distributes questionnaires to 25 respondents to find out the effect of the advertisement to the readers. After the data have been collected, they are presented and analyzed to answer the statement of the research problems above by using Cruse and Griffiths theory. Finally, this research shows that all of advertisers use interesting words or phrases to promote their products. The advertisers state that their product is the best of all. So, it can make the readers interest and buy their products. The conclusions are sentence meaning of language advertisement is different from its intended meaning. The language of advertisements are exaggerated and do not give valid information, therefore, it does not convince the readers’ mind to buy the products. Thus, advertisements aim to persuade the consumers to obtain the products.
