Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between intravenous therapy sites and phlebitis events. Research design using Correlation Analysis with purposive sampling technique, according to inclusion criteria as many as 16 patients (respondent) in pairs of intravenous therapy. The instrument uses a modified observation sheet from the V.I.P (Visual Infusion Phlebitis) score from United Lincolnshire Hospital NHS Trust Infection Control Manual (RCN, 2005). The study was conducted in the inpatient wards of the 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th floor at Husada Utama Hospital Surabaya. Non-parametric statistical test with Chi-Square test. The results showed more than 62.50% of infusion was attached to the metacarpal vein, and the rest were infused with 31, 25% cephalic vein and 6.25% basilica vein. While for phlebitis events showed respondents who Phlebitis as much as 56.25%, and not Phlebitis as much as 43.75%. Chi-Square statistic test shows the value of p = 0,002, meaning there is the relation of location of intravenous therapy with phlebitis incidence. Conclusions Phlebitis is an inflammation of the veins caused by chemical, bacterial, and mechanical irritation in the installation of intravenous therapy characterized by redness, pain, and swelling in the venous puncture area. The selection of veins in the infusion installation is a large unbranched vein and is not located in the joint region. Keywords: Location of Intravenous Therapy, Plebitis
