Abstract
Language is social phenomenon. It is a means of communication between individuals. As a means of communication between individuals, language is used in every human activities both in formal and informal situation. Speech is one of formal communications which use language as the main tool to deliver messages or informations. Presidents’ Inaugural Address is one of political speech that is arranged to convince, influence, and persuade the audience. John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s Inaugural Address is one of speech that live on to today. Some of the sentences in this speech sometimes are still recited by the leaders of the world, and it is ranked at the second place after I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr. Among 100 best speeches in America. There are three questions are formulated in this research; 1) What are figures of Speech are used in JFK’s Inaugural Address? 2) What are the possible meanings of the figures of speech used in the speech? 3) How do the Figures Of Speech contribute to the power of the speech so that it can persuade the audience?. This research applied some theories. Stylistics, Some concepts of Figures of Speech and some other important points. Qualitative research methods is choosen for this study since the data used in the form of words. The findings of this research shows that, JFK’s Inaugural Address using some figurative language or Figures of Speech namely; alliteration, antithesis, anaphora, asyndeton, chiasmus, metaphor, parallelism that have emphatic function and make the speech powerful, more vivid, and memorable in audience mind so that it can persuade the audience. Key words: Figures Of Speech, Persuasive, Sentence, Inaugural Address.
