Abstract

This study aims to determine the amount of Escherichia coli in sliced melon sold by sliced fruit traders along street Kupang, Surabaya. Melon has a delicious taste, sweet and fresh fruit also has a lot of its nutritional content that is beneficial to the body, including calories, vitamins A and C useful for preventing elephantiasis disease, cancer sores, eye diseases, and inflammation of the nerves. Improper storage and processing will cause a decrease in quality and damage to food. One of the microbes that can contaminate food is Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli is a normal flora in the digestive tract of animals and humans that easily contaminates water, various diseases depending on the site of infection such as urinary tract infections and diarrhea. The type of research used is descriptive. The sample used was 30 sliced melons sold along street Kupang, Surabaya, from 10 sellers per seller, 3 sliced melons were taken. The inspection method in this research is Surface/Spread Plate. Melon sliced samples were planted on Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) media, if there were metallic green colonies, they were transferred to Indole, Methyl Red, Voges Proskauer, Simon Citrate (IMViC), and TSIA media. The results showed that all samples of melon slices 100% had Escherichia coli <20/gram so it can be concluded that all samples of sliced melons examined met the provisions of the Indonesian National Standard (2009) and were fit for consumption.
