                Abstract

                Learners who are able to learn English effectively as they use it as often as they communicate in their daily live. This phenomenon has been classified into Language Learning Strategy. There iscorrelationbetweenlearning strategies and successfullearners.Thus,theresearcherinterestedtoknowthe learningstrategies used bythem in improvingtheir speakingskill. This thesis will describe the steps of three level learners through their Metacognitive learning strategy. They are High, Average, and Low level learner of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surabaya which purposely chosen by their teacher themselves. This thesis used the theory of Metacognitive Strategy based on O’Malley and Chamot (1997) as a major theory. There are four questions of the research that must be answered; First, what the extent of High Level student uses metacognitive strategy in learning speaking? Second, what the extent of Average student uses metacognitive strategy in learning speaking? Third, what the extent of Low Level student uses metacognitive strategy in learning speaking? And fourth, what are the differences and similarities between High, Average, and Low level student? The result showed that they use it in different score in this learning strategy. The average and low level learner are not well-prepared learner, because they did not much concern with their; Selective attention, Planning, and monitoring which is as their preparation before they dospeaking activities. That reasons made them different with High level learner who prepared Selective attention, Planning, and monitoring section in her learning strategy in order to reach the better result.
