                Abstract

A good comunication through a language can be meaningful and understanable if we interpret the language on the assumption that is the speaker is obeying cooperative principle. Grice characterizes the cooperative principle into four maxims; 1) maxim of quantity (be brief), 2) maxim of quality (be true), 3) maxim of relation (be relevant), and 4) maxim of manner (clear). On the research was aimed at identifying the flouting of Grice’s maxims in political interview entitled “ Exclusive Political Interview with Christine Lagarde”. The data were collected from five downloaded videos that were taken from youtobe.com on February 24, 2013. Qualitative method was employed in processing the transcription of the data. The data were transcribed, identified, classified, and then separetely analyzed based on Grice’s Cooperative Principles proposed by Grice (1975). The findings show that Christien Lagarde flouts all the maxims. There are 16 utterances as the flouting maxims of quality, 4 utterances as flouting maxims of relation and 2 utterances as flouting maxim of manner and flouting maxims of quality. Christine avoids the ‘yes/no’ answers and gives some explanation for questions. Christine manages and controls the information with positive sentences to protect the image of IMF. Christine flouts the maxims to enhance IMF’s credibilty, self-protection, control of information, elaboration and image. These reasons give a great contribution to build a positive political image of the politicians over the public. Keywords : Cooperative Principle, Political Interview, Flouting of Maxims
