                Abstract

                This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Figures of Speech in Two Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Poems. The final project of the analysis are Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Poems that contain figures of speech. Figure of speech is element to make poem beautiful. The researcher would like to analyze this poem, because of Elizabeth Barrett Browning still seldom to analyzed as a figure of speech. Moreover, the researcher choses two of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poems. This analyze of figures of speech, possible meaning and contribution of figures of speech. This research use data qualitative methods. The result of the research, there are kinds of figures of speeech in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poems: personification, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, alliteration, assonance, and anaphora. The possible meaning of the poem “How do I love Thee” tell about life and love because, the author describe her condition to express her husband and she explain of how much she truly loves husband, Robert Browning. the possible meaning of the poem “If Thou must love Me” tell about the author’s feeling toward her husband. Her love to him is true, honest and unconditional, she also afraid his love will fade away. The contribution of figures of speech to this poems is, it give an exaggeration, comparison, explicit and implicit effect in this poem. So, it makes in the poems more romantic, vivid, strengthening and beautiful meanning. Key Words: Literature, Poem, Figure of speech
