Abstract
The purpose of the research is to analyze about lexical cohesion devices in Barrack Obama speech farewell address speech 2017 in Chicago. The function of lexical cohesion in utterances through indicator of stance. Stance is expresses someone that will be conveyed variously in relation to topic and audience The goals of this research are:1) To identify the kinds of lexical cohesion system and 2) To describe the functions of lexical cohesion system of Barrack Obama’s speech in farewell address in Chicago 2017. This research used a descriptive qualitative. The result of this research by used Halliday and Hasan theory(1976). Those are lexical are Reiteration (Repetition, Synonym, Superordinate and General Word) and Collocation (Hyponymy, Antonymy, Meronymy, same referent) and the stance theories from Robert Cockcroft and Susan M.Cockcroft (1992) Then, the dominant devices of lexical are Reiteration, in particular repetition, reaches 47. Mean while, the dominant devices of lexical is collocation is superordinate, only occurs once. it’s related to the stance that the highest frequently occurs to personality and stance in particular persuader and audience. It’s means that the use of repetation related to purpose of speech that belongs to stance categories persuader and audience. The purpose is persuading American to continue his struggle during his reign for making American to be democracy country and against discrimination. The speaker mostly used Reiteration in particular personal repetition. Those words determine the main target of this farewell speech as a construct stance his speech. Key words: Lexical cohesion, Speech, and Construct Stance.
