Abstract
Keywords: Taboo Words, Word Choice, Male and Female, and Gender As social media Twitter is susceptible to any language including expressions of taboo words. This research is intended to find out (1) the difference word choice by male and female, (2) taboo words frequently used, and (3) the context in which they are used. Descriptive qualitative approach is employed and the phenomenology method is applied. The data are from male and female tweets. By matching them to Jay's list of taboo words ten male and ten female tweets are selected. Further, narrative analysis is employed to analyze the data. Then, content analysis is applied to look for themes and meanings of the texts, considering the frequencies of existing taboo words in the data. It is found that fuck, shit, hell, damn, asshole, bitch, nigger, and dick are used by male and female. However, male only words are Oh, my God and beast and female only are sucks, cunt, gosh and dumb. Male curse more often than female (31 to 24 utterences). Interestingly fuck and shit occur one-third of total occurrences and is similar to Jay’s claim that they remains stable over the past 20 years. Words like Jesus Christ, cocksucker, motherfucker, piss, and retarded do not appear but dick, gosh, dumb, and beast emerge. Finally, the situation those taboo words are used is sometimes not the same for male and female. Unlike male, female use fuck or fucking when they are angry. Further deeper research may include cultural observation of those taboo words, which is a limitation of this research.
