Abstract
The maternal mortality rate in 2012 reached 359 per 100,000 live births and an increase of 57% compared to
the maternal mortality rate in 2007 which reached 228 per 100,000 live births. The number of pregnant women
with high risk / complications in Bantul Regency in 2013 was 2,902 people or 20% of pregnant women who
were there. Pregnant women with high risk / referral complications are 82.4% of the number of high-risk
pregnant women. This achievement is less when compared to the previous year at 83.7%. The target for
handling high-risk pregnant women in 2012 is 100%, and all pregnant women with high risk / complications
found have been treated. Midwives are primary care providers and are part of the referral system. Midwives
can act as a gate keeper for pregnant women who need advanced services. The ability of midwives in early
detection of high-risk pregnancies is an important factor in reducing maternal mortality.
