Abstract

Keywords: Racial Discrimination, Edgar Allan, Sufferings, Edgar Allan Racial Discrimination of colored people has become popular in the history of the United Stated. It therefore, the white people used to do this towards the black people. So that, there have been many effects which are suffered by the colored people. Some of them are sometimes the black people get inconveniently treatment because they are different; furthermore they also suffered inequitable of privilege. They are all lies in the story of Edgar Allan novel. It is a fiction story which tells about the small black child named Edgar Allan who is adopted by the white family from adoption agency. After all happens, the Edgar Allan is the one who suffered this racism. Related to the issue of racial discrimination occurs in Edgar Allan novel, Lawrence and Kelleher (as cited in Nursani’s thesis, 2013) defined the term of Structural racism as a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized by white supremacy to maintain their authority over oppressed people. Then, the structural racism occurs in some parts, such as in the form of aversive racial attitudes, individual racism, institutional racism, and interpersonal racism. Besides, it is also supported by many expressions of prejudice for instance, antilocution of prejudice, avoidance of prejudice, discrimination of prejudice and extermination of prejudice. As they are shown in this novel, however, the Edgar Allan cannot stay for a long time with his new family because of these. Then, this research found the racial discrimination suffered by Edgar Allan that can be seen from the family’s point of view as the first analysis and the second from the institutional’s point of view. Here, The Edgar Allan suffered all these racial discrimination. He just receives them unconsciously level for he is still very young for about almost three years of age. Hence, he cannot against this racial discrimination till he must return to the adoption agency.
