Abstract
Language is needed by people to existence their communication. People’s speech intends to communicate with the audience. Beside that the quality of great persuasion in public speaking is the speaker commonly uses the figures of speech. Stylistics is used to know the style of text also style explained as distinctive linguistic expression and description of its effectusing figures of speech as helping choice available in a given context.Using figures of speech the researcher wonder as to know what are the possible meaning carried by figures of speech in “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” and the function of the figures of speech. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The techniques which were used to collect the data that consisting of textual material from the FDR’s speech. They were to describe the research problem that can best understood by exploring a concept. After collecting the data, the writer finding and identify the figures of speech and the figures of speech function in the “Pearl harbor Address to the Nation”. The finding of this research, four figures of speech there are; hyperbole, personification, synecdoche, and repetition.The possible meaning of hyperbole is foreshadow and emphasis the sentence, personification use to vivid the speech character with represented day as having human attributes, repetition is uses to highlight “Japanese and attacked”, and synecdoche to represent the United Stated that all of American people, Congress, the navy and the Army. All of the figures of speech used by FDR in his speech are functionally to foreshadow moreover emphasis the speech to vivid emotion of the United Stated people and to recommend Congress to formally declare war on The Empire of Japan and to furthering the American to support the war effort.
