Abstract

English and Mandarin are languages that have placed important role now. English is a language of instruction in many ways of life. English is not a foreign language anymore but it has become the first or main language for everyone. Mandarin is also increased fast. In Indonesia, Mandarin becomes one of languages of instruction because Chinese people have been part of Indonesia for a long time. In the future, these two languages will be more necessary because world trade era has just began and these two languages take important role in mastering the trade. The thesis ‘Some Differences Between English and Mandarin Structure’ has some purposes. The comparison is important. Learning English is interesting but learning Mandarin is more interesting because in Mandarin, some unique sides are found, for example pronounciation and Hanzi or character. These languages are quite different in pronounciation and writing. Grammar also has some differences eventhough there are some similarities too. The sentences in both languages are also different. This comparison is also purposed to give brief explanation about simple, compound, and complex sentences. English is not only speaking but understanding how to make good and right sentences is important to make our English better. In Mandarin, definite tenses are not known. Mandarin is like Indonesia language in Verb case. There is no conjugation for Verb. Learning Mandarin means we have to study twice. First, we have to learn about new pronounciation and second, we have to learn about Mandarin characters or Hanzi that has a number more than 1,500 characters. Mandarin also has ‘be’ like in English, that is ‘shi’. But ‘shi’ has different function like ‘be’ in English. There are still many things that make Mandarin and English different or same. The differences between them will give or enrich information about foreign languages.
