Abstract
Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a skin problem that can disrupt appearance and undermine confidence due to its tendency to cause itching. Excessive scratching can lead to inflammation, making the skin susceptible to infections. Current eczema treatments involve both non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapies, which are time-consuming and costly. Therefore, an alternative treatment using a hydrogel formulation derived from the extract of gotu kola leaves (Centella asiatica) is proposed. Gotu kola is a plant known for its antimicrobial properties, with active compounds capable of inhibiting bacterial growth. The aim of this research is to determine the concentration of gotu kola leaf extract and assess the effectiveness of the hydrogel formulation in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The extraction of gotu kola leaves is carried out through the maceration process using ethanol as a solvent. The antibacterial properties are evaluated using the well diffusion method. Extract concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 30%, 50%, and 75% are prepared, with a positive control using the antibiotic Clindamycin. The average clear zone diameter obtained is 15.25 mm. At a concentration of 2.5%, the clear zone diameter is 4.5 mm, at 5% it is 5 mm, and at 7.5% it is 7 mm. Meanwhile, the second treatment with concentrations of 30%, 50%, and 75% yields clear zones of 24 mm, 27 mm, and 27 mm, respectively, compared to the positive control with a zone of 24 mm. These results indicate that gotu kola leaf extract exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with a concentration of 75% being sensitive and able to inhibit the bacterial growth rate, resulting in a clear zone of 27 mm.
