Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the symbols in Walt Whitman’s poetry entitled “Beat! Beat! Drums!”, “ Captain! My Captain!”, “For Him I Sing”. The three poems choosen because they have the same theme and contain symbol. This study applies descriptive qualitative method. The writer uses Hurtik and Yarber’s theory to analyzing the types of symbols used in Walt Whitman’s poetry. After analyzing the symbol, it could be concluded that each poems contains of different symbols with different meaning and function. And these differences has given the different ideas. From the three poems, “Beat! Beat! Drums!”, O Captain! My Captain!”, and “For Him I Sing”, Walt Whitman would like to convey the ideas about the sadness during Ameria’s civil war and the honor given for the captain Abraham Lincoln.
