Abstract
Key words: Code Switching, Types and Reasons, Facebook. This research is refers to sociolinguistic study focuses on code switching. Currently, the Facebookers, especially the students of English Department often like to switch their language on facebook. This research aims to analysis and finding the types and reasons of code switching found in facebook based on the science of sociolinguistics. The design of research is descriptive qualitative research, because this is the primary means of collecting data with the data collection method based on the observation on the internet. The results of qualitative analysis in this research indicate that the types of code switching, namely: emblematic, intra- sentential, inter- sentential, establishing continuity with the previous speaker, involving a change of pronunciation. Then, the reasons of code switching, as follows: talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, showing emphatic about something, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector), repetition used for clarification, expressing group identity. The results of this research can be concluded that the types of code switching written by students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University at Surabaya found in facebook are emblematic, intra-sentential, inter-sentential, establishing continuity with the previous speaker, involving a change of pronunciation. Then, the reasons of code switching written by students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University at Surabaya found in facebook are talking about a particular topic, quoting somebody else , showing emphatic about something, interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector), repetition used for clarification , expressing group identity.
