Abstract
Key words : Metaphor, speech, Abraham Lincoln’s speeches Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is fundamentally a social activity. Metaphor is one type of figurative language that presupposing a similarity of two or more things. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. This research presents kind of metaphors which is used in Abraham Lincoln’s three speeches. They are Lincoln’s First Public Speech, from an Address to the People of Sangamon County. March 9, 1832. , Lincoln’s Farewell Address at Springfield, Illinois. February 11, 1861. , and the last is His Proclamation for a Day of Thanksgiving. October 3, 1863. According to the research, the researcher observes five kind of metaphorical expression in Abraham Lincoln’s speeches. They are nominal metaphor, predicative metaphor, sentential metaphor, dead metaphor and live metaphor. The purpose of metaphorical expressions is for creating more interesting speech when the listeners or the audiences listen the speaker’s speech.
