Abstract
This thesis brought the study of CDA to the discursive events of Bill Clinton’s Inaugural address as it is relevant with liberal discourse. It investigated the predestined future policies of Bill Clinton as the actor of American liberal leader. This research aimed to reveal overall theme of inaugural address, the ideological component of Clinton’s liberal ideals, and the justification of Clinton’s liberal ideals. A qualitative method of van Dijk’s steps of CDA was complemented by Fairclough’s three dimension of CDA. The lingustic components; namely, rhetorical device, grammatical feature, thematization, and keywords were analyzed under the concept of semantic macrostructure, local meaning, social cognition, social situation, context model and event model to intepret the possible meaning. The analysis summed up the inauguration address as “To renew America in terms of sacrificing nation effort, face global challenge, and revitalize administration by means of the power of people and the idea of liberal democracy” Secondly, the analysis demonstrated how ideological components is concealed; specifically, inclusiveness, unity, renewal, strategic diplomacy, global governance, welfare state, environmentalism, collaboration, and healthcare. Thirdly, the analysis showed the justification of the aforementioned components; specifically, Declaration of the Independence of America, Thomas Jefferson’s Quote, and Galatians Scripture. Keywords: CDA, liberal discourse, political discourse, ideological components
