This research is qualitative because the researcher wanted to analyze the failure mechanism symptoms of the main antagonist by describing the events which occur in the story. The researcher just focused on the main antagonist who experienced the failure mechanism. The researcher found that the main antagonist character had been experienced four among seven symptoms failure mechanism, there were frustration, aggressiveness, uncertainty and resentment. The main antagonist character also tried to cope those symptoms. But unfortunately, he could not cope those symptoms because of some factors. First, he failed to cope frustration because he could not control his emotion. Second, he failed to cope aggressiveness since he was still young. Therefore, he used his Id so that he cannot control his emotion. Third, he failed to cope uncertainty because he was doubt to hit Wild Bill when the other guards asked him. On the other hand, he was also doubt to move on Briar Ridge. The last, he failed to cope his resentment because he could not threaten the other guards by using his status as a governor’s nephew.
