Abstract

In teaching English, vocabulary is the most important factor in developing the four language skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking). Therefore the students obtain vocabulary in order to express their idea, feeling and opinion orally and in writing. Teaching English to Elementary School is a new thing in the Indonesian System Education. Most of English teacher faces some difficulties in applying the right teaching learning process. As a result, the students get bored easily. Therefore, the teacher should choose the techniques, which induce interesting situations. Using songs to teach vocabulary seems to be one of the techniques, which may result in such situation. Songs are satisfying art form. People can listen to the songs everywhere, every time, weather they are in happy or sad condition. As an alternative way of teaching, songs can make an excellent means in stimulating students’ interest. Songs can provide relax classroom atmosphere and bring variety and fun in teaching and learning. Because of the reasons, the writer interested in using songs in order to overcome the problem and to give relaxation and enjoyment to the students in English vocabulary. The writer did a research to the fourth year students of SDN Trawas Mojokerto. The problem was as follows: Compared to those who are not thought by using songs, is the achievement of the elementary school students who are taught by using songs in vocabulary items higher? Then the line with the problems, the purpose of the study was to investigate whether the students who are taught by using songs have better achievement in learning vocabulary than those who are not taught by using songs. Related to the problem above, the writer used an experimental research and used pre test and post test control group design. Half from Class IV was the experimental group that the writer gave pre test, treatment and post test. The technique of taking the sample, the writer used the score result of pre test and post test of the experimental and control group. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed them. The writer calculated the differences between the pre test and post test scores of both group by using t-test. The result showed that the value of t-test was 2.84 greater than t-table 2.00 at 0.05 levels of significance for d.f 22. thus, there was significant difference in achievement scores between the experimental and control group. So, it can be concluded that the use of songs can be a successful way to teach English vocabulary for the fourth year students of elementary school. Finally, it was expected that the teachers should consider the use of songs as one of techniques in teaching learning vocabulary since it could increase the students’ vocabulary.
