Abstract
Mardianto, Eko. 2014. An Analysis of Thematization in Martin Luther King Jr.’s Speech “I Have a Dream”. Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan. Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya. Advisor I. Dr. Ahmad Idris Asmaradhani, M.Pd. Advisor II. Linda Mayasari, S.Pd., M.Pd. This analysis provides the study concerning the thematization in one speech of Martin Luther King Jr., “I Have a Dream.” This study analyzes the organization of theme and rheme and the possible intended meaning of the thematization within the speech, “I Have a Dream.” This analysis aims to describe the thematization of the statements within the speech and to discover also the possible intended meaning of the thematization. This analysis follows the design of qualitative research since the analysis is given in the form of detailed description. It follows the design of qualitative rather than quantitative research since the analysis is for identification of recurrent patterns or themes and to construct a cohesive representation of the data. The conclusion shows that thematization gives the organization of the words within a discourse various interpretations. In the speech “I Have a Dream”, there are topicalization (organizes the message in the front), cleft (organizes the message in predication) and pseudo-cleft (organizes the message in equal position with the comment) that appear as the process of thematisaztion. It is topicalization that appears as the most occurring thematization in the speech. This various organization has brought various strong emphases to the statements within the speech. Keywords: thematization, theme, rheme.
