Abstract
This research discussed the translation strategies used by the translator in interpretation idiomatic expressions Captain America: The First Avenger movie. The researcher analyzed two problems that occur in this research. First, what types of idiomatic expression can be found in Captain America: The First Avenger movie script and second, what are the strategies used by the translator to translate idiomatic expression in Captain America: The First Avenger movie script. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze because the method used to identified and described the patterns that occur in the word and sentence in this movie. The data were taken from the characters’ conversation in the movie script and also the movie itself to get precise utterances. The theory used by researcher to analyze this data based on Cowie, Mackin, and McCaig (1993) quoted in Tu 2007 and analyzed the strategy by Mona Baker (1992). The finding result of this research indicated that there is 30 analysis of data containing idiomatic expressions and strategy for translation. Phrase idiom was mostly found and appeared by the characters in the conversation of this movie. Translation by paraphrase also mostly found and used by the translator. In the end, the researcher expects that this thesis can be useful as a source of theory and practice in learning English idiom translation as well as for others who compose further research on English idioms, especially translation.
