Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases with hyperglycaemia characteristics that occur due to abnormalities in insulin secretion, insulin action or both, characterized by an increase in glucose levels in the blood that exceeds normal amounts and the presence of disorders in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism associated with insulin secretion. The number of DM patients in Surabaya is 113,970 people in 2023. Low adherence can be caused by forgetfulness, not adhering to treatment as directed by doctors, can decrease quality of life and cause complications. As health workers who play a direct role in drug services, pharmacists have a strategic position in increasing the compliance of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with drug therapy in pharmacies. This research aimed to determine the role of pharmacists in increasing patient compliance through education, counseling and monitoring drug use.
Method: This research was quantitative, the number of respondents obtained was 80 respondents by the purposive sampling method. The research was in accordance with the inclusion criteria, then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: Chi-Square test showed that there was no association between the role of pharmacists and the patient’s level of adherence to drug therapy with a p-value result = >0.05. Conclusion: It can be concluded that there was no significant effect on patient compliance. Suggestion: Subsequent research was expected to consider other factors that can affect adherence such as family support, understanding of illness.
