Abstract

Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability that can result in motor function impairment, particularly in the upper extremities, thereby reducing hand strength and the ability to perform daily activities such as eating. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) training on improving right-hand strength for eating movements in stroke patients. Research Method: This was a quantitative study using a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design involving 10 stroke patients at Bhakti Dharma Husada General Hospital in Surabaya, selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used were a Digital Hand Grip Dynamometer to measure right-hand strength and the “feeding” item on the Barthel Index to assess eating ability. The intervention was conducted over several sessions in accordance with the PNF exercise program. Data analysis used the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, followed by a Paired Sample T-Test for hand strength and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test for eating ability. Results: The study showed an increase in average right-hand strength from 12.4 ± 2.1 kg to 18.7 ± 2.8 kg after the intervention, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), as well as an improvement in eating ability—no respondents were classified as totally dependent, and there was an increase in the number of respondents classified as independent, with a p-value of 0.025 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) training has a positive effect on improving right-hand strength for eating movements in stroke patients.
