Abstract

Fish vendors are a group of workers at risk of exposure to microorganisms due to a damp, wet work environment and frequent direct contact with water. These conditions can support the growth of fungi, including Aspergillus sp., which is commonly found in the environment and has the potential to cause health problems. This study aimed to determine the presence of Aspergillus sp. in the spaces between the toes of fish vendors in the Pabean District of Surabaya. This was a descriptive study using macroscopic and microscopic examination methods at the Parasitology and Mycology Laboratory of Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya. The study samples consisted of 47 swabs collected from between the toes of fish vendors in the Pabean District of Surabaya, obtained using purposive sampling. Examination was conducted by culturing the samples on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium, followed by observation of the colonies’ macroscopic characteristics and microscopic examination using Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LCB) staining to identify the fungi based on their morphology under a 40x magnification microscope. The results showed that of the 47 interdigital toe swab samples collected from fish vendors in the Pabean District of Surabaya, 25 samples tested positive for Aspergillus sp. (53.20%), while 22 samples tested negative for Aspergillus sp. (45.80%). The Aspergillus sp. species identified included Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus fumigatus, with Aspergillus niger being the most commonly found species. These results indicated that the majority of interdigital toe swab samples from fish vendors in the Pabean District of Surabaya were positive for Aspergillus sp. This is likely due to the fact that most of these workers do not practice adequate personal hygiene.
