Abstract

Skin fungal infections caused by Trichophyton rubrum remain common in tropical countries such as Indonesia. The crowded and humid environment of Islamic boarding school, together with the shared use of facilities, may increase the risk of fungal transmission, particularly when personal hygiene is inadequate. This study aimed to determine the presence of Trichophyton rubrum in foot swab specimens collected from students of Annuqayah Latee II Islamic Boarding School. This descriptive study employed a purposive sampling technique. A total of 26-foot swab specimens were cultured on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA), followed by macroscopic and microscopic identification using Lactophenol Cotton Blue (LCB).The findings showed that, of the 26 specimens examined, 1 specimen (3.84%) tested positive for Trichophyton rubrum, while the remaining 25 specimens (96.15%) were negative. The positive specimen exhibited macroscopic characteristics of white to cream-colored, cotton-like colonies and microscopic features consisting of septate hyphae and characteristic microconidia of Trichophyton rubrum. These findings indicate that Trichophyton rubrum was still present on the plantar surface of students’ feet, although the prevalence was relatively low. Maintaining good personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness within the Islamic boarding school remains essential to reduce the risk of fungal infection.
