Abstract

Female adolescent students in Islamic boarding schools are at risk of Trichomonas vaginalis infection if they do not maintain proper reproductive hygiene. Trichomonas vaginalis is a unicellular protozoan and the primary cause of sexually transmitted infections (STIs); this infection is known as trichomoniasis. This study aims to determine the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis in the urine of female adolescent students at boarding school in the Bangkalan region. This is a descriptive study using the Wet Mount microscopic examination method, which involves placing a drop of centrifuged urine sediment onto a microscope slide without staining, covering it with a cover slip, and then observing it under a microscope. A total of 48 urine samples from female adolescent students at boarding school were examined using purposive sampling. The results showed that 1 sample (2.08%) tested positive and 47 samples (97.92%) tested negative for Trichomonas vaginalis. Based on the questionnaire results, the majority of respondents practiced good personal hygiene. However, respondents who tested positive exhibited poor personal hygiene practices, such as sharing towels, failing to wash their own underwear regularly, and wearing damp underwear. Additionally, poor environmental sanitation conditions in shared living quarters may contribute to an increased risk of infection. It was concluded that Trichomonas vaginalis was still detected in a small proportion of urine samples from female adolescent students at boarding school in the Bangkalan, Madura region. Therefore, the practice of good personal hygiene, maintaining environmental sanitation, reproductive health education, and early detection remain necessary as preventive measures against infection
