Abstract

The background of this research is that noise is a form of environmental pollution that can cause physiological stress and affect various body systems, including the hematopoietic system. Stress-induced noise can trigger changes in erythrocytes that may affect Erythrocyte Index values. This study aims to determine the comparison of Erythrocyte Index results, which include Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC) in Rattus norvegicus exposed and not exposed to noise. The research method used is quantitative, with a true experimental design and a post-test-only control group. The research sample consisted of 16 male Rattus norvegicus, divided into treatment and control groups, each with 8 individuals. The treatment group was exposed to noise ≥85 dB for 3 hours/day for 5 consecutive days, while the control group was not exposed to noise. Erythrocyte Index examination was performed using a hematology analyzer, specifically the Sysmex XN-450. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test followed by the Independent Sample T-Test. The research results showed that the mean MCV in the treatment group was 58.2 ± 4.3 fL, and in the control group was 56.7 ± 3.8 fL; the mean MCH was 17.5 ± 0.6 pg and 17.3 ± 1.0 pg; and the mean MCHC was 29.9 ± 1.3 g/dL and 30.3 ± 1.5 g/dL. The results of the Independent Sample T-Test showed non-significant p-values for MCV (p=0.42), MCH (p=0.57), and MCHC (p=0.52), indicating that all parameters had p-values> 0.05. This study concludes that there is no significant difference in Erythrocyte Indices (MCV, MCH, and MCHC) between Rattus norvegicus exposed to noise and those not exposed to noise.
