Abstract

Background: Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections are one of the public health issues in developing countries, including Indonesia. Waste cleaning staff are a high-risk group for STH infection because they often come into direct contact with environments that may be contaminated with worm eggs. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the ZnSO₄ 33% flotation method and the NaCl 0.9% sedimentation method, and to compare the ability of both methods in detecting STH eggs in the feces of cleaning staff in Central Surabaya. Method: Using a quantitative analytical observational design and a paired comparative study design. The population of this study consists of waste cleaning staff in the Central Surabaya area, and a sample of 34 people was obtained using the purposive sampling technique. The data analysis technique used the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: It showed that the ZnSO₄ 33% flotation method detected 6 positive STH egg samples, while the 0.9% NaCl sedimentation method detected 4 positive STH egg samples. The types of STH eggs found included Ascaris lumbricoides and Hookworm. The Mann-Whitney U test showed an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.497 (p > 0.05), which means there is no significant difference between the two methods. Conclusion: The ZnSO₄ 33% flotation method has a higher detection capability for STH eggs compared to the NaCl 0.9% sedimentation method, but the difference is not statistically significant.
