Abstract

Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections remain a health problem due to direct contact with contaminated soil. Plant sellers in South Surabaya are at high risk of STH exposure, particularly through dirty and long nails. This study aims to identify the prevalence of Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH) infections in fingernail samples from plant sellers in South Surabaya. The benefits of this study are to increase knowledge and serve as a scientific reference in the field of parasitology, as well as to improve skills and experience in conducting laboratory tests related to the identification of Soil-Transmitted Helminth (STH) parasites. Theoretically, STHs such as Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura can reproduce in soil, and their eggs easily adhere to unkempt nails. The method used was descriptive with an observational approach in the laboratory. The sample consisted of 25 plant sellers selected using a purposive sampling technique. Nail examinations were conducted using a sedimentation technique using a 10% KOH solution to soften nail keratin so that worm eggs could be observed under a microscope. The results showed that all 25 samples tested (100%) tested negative. No eggs, larvae, or STH worms were found. Discussion of these results indicates that the absence of STH contamination is strongly influenced by respondents' good personal hygiene practices, such as washing hands with soap and keeping nails short and clean. In conclusion, the nails of plant sellers in South Surabaya are free from STH infection. It is hoped that workers will maintain a clean and healthy lifestyle to prevent future worm infections.
