Abstract

The elderly population in Surabaya continues to rise rapidly; however, the availability of adequate elderly care facilities remains very limited, often lacking sufficient attention to safety and green spaces. The physical, physiological, and psychological decline associated with aging necessitates an environment that functions not merely as a place of residence, but as a setting that supports mental well-being and independence. This project aims to design an elderly day care center in South Surabaya that is safe, accessible, and supportive of the healing process through a "healing environment" architectural approach. The design methodology employs a rational method for analyzing functional and site data, alongside a creative method for developing design concepts. The site is located in the Gayung Kebonsari area of South Surabaya, covering a land area of 20,000 m². The healing environment concept is implemented through the optimal use of natural elements including the integration of inner courtyards, cross-ventilation, and natural lighting to reduce stress and anxiety among the elderly. The design emphasizes a clustered building layout to create a residential scale that feels intimate and home-like, the use of non-slip flooring, the installation of handrails along all circulation paths, and a clear wayfinding system to prevent stress. By integrating facilities with nature, this design aims to holistically improve the quality of life for the elderly and dispel the negative stigma often associated with elderly care homes in the community.
