Abstract
========================================================================================
The rapid development of digital technology has fundamentally transformed journalistic practices, particularly in the ways information is produced, distributed, and consumed. The shift from conventional media to digital platforms has fostered a more interactive, personal, and dialogic communication environment. In this context, the classical principles of journalism, which emphasize objectivity, formal language, and the inverted pyramid structure, have undergone significant changes. One of the most notable phenomena emerging from this transformation is personal journalism, which places the writer’s experience, subjectivity, and identity at the center of the narrative. This study aims to analyze the evolution of Dahlan Iskan’s writing style from the era of Jawa Pos to the contemporary Disway platform, identify the stylistic characteristics that constitute the concept of “Dahlanism,” and explain how this concept reflects the transformation of personal journalism and the digital public sphere in Indonesia.
This research employs a qualitative approach within an interpretive paradigm. The analysis is conducted through a stylistic perspective to examine linguistic and textual structures, Roland Barthes’ theory of The Death of the Author to understand the relationship between authorial subjectivity and readers’ meaning-making processes, and Jürgen Habermas’ theory of the public sphere to explain the position of Disway within the contemporary digital communication ecosystem. The study also incorporates concepts from narrative journalism, intimate journalism, and Anthony Giddens’ theory of reflexive modernity to understand the autobiographical tendencies evident in Dahlan Iskan’s writings.
The findings reveal that Dahlan Iskan’s writing style has evolved from conventional journalism into a more fluid, dialogic, and experience-based form of personal journalism. His writings in Disway exhibit distinctive stylistic features, including the use of extremely short paragraphs, visual rhythm that creates dramatic effects, conversational and egalitarian language, the explicit presence of the first-person narrator, and chronological storytelling resembling diary entries. These characteristics foster a strong emotional connection between the writer and readers and establish media authority that relies not on institutional legitimacy but on the author's personal credibility and identity.
This study formulates the concept of “Dahlanism” as a deconstructive paradigm of personal journalism. The concept consists of four principal characteristics: the deconstruction of the rigid conventions of classical journalism, transparent subjectivity through the explicit presence of the author, egalitarian language that is accessible to a broad audience, and an orientation toward manufacturing hope, namely the production of social optimism. Unlike many contemporary digital media outlets that tend to exploit sensationalism and pessimism to attract public attention, “Dahlanism” places hope at the center of narrative construction.
The findings further indicate that Disway represents not merely the evolution of an individual journalist’s writing style, but also the transformation of the digital public sphere into a more personal, horizontal, and participatory communication space. Therefore, “Dahlanism” can be understood as an indigenous form of personal journalism in Indonesia and offers a theoretical contribution to the study of communication, digital media, and contemporary journalistic stylistics.
