                Abstract

                The problem in this research is finding type of defense mechanism in Robert Frost’s three poems. This research proposed to find out type of defense mechanism in Robert Frost’s three poems. In this research, the researcher chooses some poetries by Robert frost entitled “Fire and Ice”, “Stopping by Woods on A Snowy Evening” and “The Road Not Taken” because the Robert Frost’s poem contains some types of defense mechanism. This research used qualitative method because qualitative method is a descriptive way in the form of words and language and then, this research related with Frost’s life. Robert frost was an American poet in 1874-1963. He ever won the best poet in 1924 for New Hampshire, 1931 for collected poems, 1937 for a further range and 1943 for a witness free. Defense mechanism found in “Fire and Ice” is Repression and Rationalization. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” is Repression, Projection, Regression and Denial and the last poem “The Road Not Taken” is Repression, Denial and Rationalization. Defense mechanism are oriented toward protecting self-esteem may not contradict Freud’s views so much as it merely changes his emphasis. Key Words: Literature, Poetry, Defense Mechanism.
