Abstract
Key Words: Symbol, poem Poetry is the kind of thing poets write, poetry is also a rhythmical composition of words expressing an attitude, designed to surprise and delight, and to arouse and emotional response. Nature as a subject of literary work has been favored among the men of letters for a long time. Like most romantic poets, the greatest American woman poet in the nineteenth century, Emily Dickinson, also expressed her intense interest in nature in her poetic world. Based on the background stated above, the problems in this thesis are stated as follows (1) what are the symbols of nature found in Emily Dickinson poems “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk”? (2) What are the contributions of the symbols in revealing the total meaning found in “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” poems by Emily Dickinson? It is needed to apply some references dealing with statement of the problems such as: some theory of literature and some data are from internet. In analyzing this thesis, descriptive qualitative method was used. The data were collected through library research and classified into two groups, main data and support data. The main data, in this case the main data are “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” poems by Emily Dickinson. The support data, it is from bibliography Emily Dickinson as the writer “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” poems, article, and some books that are related with the problem, internet, etc. Finally, the researcher finds the symbols of nature and their contributions in revealing the total meaning found in Emily Dickinson poems “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” . It can use to understand about all meaning in those poems. In conclusion The data were collected through library research and classified into two groups, main data and support data. The main data, in this case the main data are “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” poems by Emily Dickinson. Finally, the researcher finds the symbols of nature and their contributions in revealing the total meaning found in Emily Dickinson poems “Nature is what we see”, “ A bird came down the walk” .
