Abstract
There is a relationship between literature and our life. The Story in the literary work concerns with something that expresses the social problem in which commonly can be found in literary work. The purposes of the research are to mention the psychological zones (id, ego, and superego) of Frederic Henry in A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway and to explain the affect of psychological zones of Frederic Henry. This thesis needs the relevant theories that are used to analyze statement of the problem. This research uses psychoanalysis theory proposed by Sigmund Freud. Freud divided the psychological zones into three: The first is das Es, or the “it,” which is almost always translate into English as “id”. The id is governed by the pleasure principle. The second is das Inc, or the “I” translate as ego, the ego is governed by the reality principle. The third is das Uber-Ich, or the “over-I,” which is rendered into English as superego, the ego is governed by the Morality principle. This research uses qualitative research because it discusses a narrative or descriptive text and it is relied on the construct definition of the problem this thesis present data analysis. The researcher continues to do analysis of the three psychological zones of Frederic Henry and answer statement of the problems. As the result of this research, the researcher summarize up that Frederic’s id appears when he falls in love with Catherine and he was so infatuated with her. Frederic’s desire to love Catherine pushes his ego to do anything. Frederic makes decision to flee and quit the army mark his farewell to arms and his commitment to Catherine. Superego appears when Catherine will die of delivering their child. He thinks that he will be punishment for their love and the guilt is the result. Keywords: Id, Ego, Superego
