Abstract
A novel is a long book story, prose that expresses actual life. Novel is a picture of real life and manners, and of time in which it was written. Novel usually sometimes can be a diary book of the author. In each novel many found character and moral value. This research is focused in the study “The Pearl” (1947) written by john Steinbeck. Based on the background above, statement of the problem as follows : 1) What types of character are Kino and Juana, and 2) What are the moral value performed by Kino and Juana. The method applied in this study is qualitative method. After having further analysis, the writer concludes that the main character in this novel, the story tell about Kino is a young pearl diver and poor Indian person and he felt his obligation to his wife, Juana and his son, Coyotito. When he thought the pearl will bring brightness in his life but instead it brought the darkness he never dreamt of. From the way she solves many problems, the writer finds some character and moral value of Kino is importance of his family ties, though he is a young pearl diver and poor person. He always hard work for his wife and son. Moral value concerning confidence, moral value concerning cruelty, and moral value concerning kindness. Keyword : character, moral value
