Abstract
This study is aimed to analyze the images of Chinese woman portrayed within Kwei-lan experiences of ambivalence. The data are taken from the dialogues or utterances selected in the novel entitled East Wind West Wind. There are two objectives of the study that are: to identify the conflicts faced by Kwei-Lan portrayed in Pearl S Buck’s Novel; and to explain the construction of Kwei-Lan’s ambivalence in Pearl S Buck’s Novel. Descriptive qualitative is applied as research method, while ambivalence as the main theory and conflict as the supporting theory. This study tries to analyze Kwei-Lan’s ambivalence in Pearl S. Buck’s Novel since she faces problems through the conservative actions of the families and the modern ones of the husband. Chinese tradition and Western modernity make Kwei-Lan stand in confusion either one she should uphold. The result presented that Kwei-Lan has changed her view upon the tradition that prioritised male position and weakens the female position and that there are contrast and co-existence between tradition and modernity exist in the society.
