Abstract

This study has the aims to analyze the types of defense mechanism on John and the influence of defense mechanism on John’s personality in the drama entitled Oleannaby David Mamet. The researcher focused on John as the main character to be the research material. The method of this research was qualitative descriptive method. The theory of this study used psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud as it became the most appropriate theory to analyze the data. From the analysis there are three defense mechanisms which are used by John to cope his fear, those are reaction formation, sublimation, and denial. This study also finds three personalities that are influenced by John’s defense mechanism. Those are as an emphatic, lustful, and emotional person which are constructed through the structural models of the id, the ego, and the superego. Key words: Oleanna, psychoanalysis, defense mechanism, and John’s personality.
