Abstract

Infectious disease is one of disease causes death in the whole world, include Indonesia. One of the bacteria that cause infection is Staphylococcus aureusbacteria. In the treatment which applies antibiotics, yet nowadaysStaphylococcus aureus is resistant to antibiotics. Because of that, it is necessary to find alternative treatment. One of plants that have characteristics to make herbal medicine is Betel Nut fruit. It has the quality of antimicrobials. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect and the optimum concentration of betel nut fruit extract toward Staphylococcus aureus. The type of research was experimental. The population was pure Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in NAS (Nutrient Agar Slank) media. The research sample was pure Staphylococcus aureus taken from pure culture. The growth od Staphylococcus aureus bacteria got by direct observation, which was trough laboratory test and the data collection technique used ANOVA test with margin error (0,05) and was continued to Tukkey HSD test with SPSS21.0 program. According to the result of antibacterial test of betel nutfruit (Areca catechu)extract, in the ANOVA test it was got probability 0,000 and it influenced the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. It was continued to Tukkey HSD test which showed that the minimum of preventivepower was in the concentration of 10%, the effective concentration to prevent the growth of Staphylococcus aureus was in the concentration of 90%. From the data above, it can be concluded that there was the effect of betel nut fruit (Areca catechu) extracttoward the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
