Abstract
In bilingual and multilingual societies, it is common for the people to speak more than one language. The members of the society tend to use two or more languages in their speech, wholly or partly based on their need. Considering this phenomenon, The Code Mixing and Code Switching by the people in Pondok Pesantren Mamba’us Sholihin 3 Benjeng-Gresik. For several reasons is made first of all, language is very important in human being. Second is reality that most of Indonesian are moslem, they know the Arabic even though a lot of them don’t understand the meaning of it so make me interest to introduce Javanese Arabic mixing and switching. Third the language used by people at Pondok Pesantren Mamba’us Sholihin is one of unique language phenomenon. Due to the fact the code mixing and code switching used by Mambaus Sholihin’s people is different from that used by the people in the surrounding, it make decided to made the study on this mixing and switching. Finally, the decision also influenced by her living in the surrounding, which in her mind would to easier and cheaper for her to carry out her study. This research has three problems, which are : 1) What forms of code mixing and code switching are used by the people at Pondok Pesantren Mamba’us Sholihin 3 Benjeng-Gresik. 2) When do they use the forms of code mixing and code switching. 3) What are the possible reasons for using code mixing and code switching. The descriptive qualitative is used to conduct this study. The writer took informants as data, used two instruments they are: Observation and Interview. The data analyzed are in the forms of Word and Phrase, the context do they used and the possible reasons of code mixing and code switching. Based on the analysis of data can be drawn some conclusions on the use of code mixing and code switching by the people in Pondok Pesantren Mamba’us Sholihin 3 Benjeng-Gresik . The possible reasons are to show Prestige or Pride, to show Solidarity with it’s group, want to relax. And the context do they use the forms of code mixing and code switching which the context is influenced by the topic of conversation, Participant and casual topic.
