Abstract
This study discusses how contemporary young adult literature entitled The Giver (Lowry, 2014). It portrays the conditions of state apparatuses in dystopian setting of time and place. This study focus on answering the question of how Ideological State Apparatus (ISA) that basically separated by ideology and Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) which employed physical forcement are operated within the The giver’s society using Althusser’s theory of state apparatuses. Descriptive qualitative research is method applied to interpret the data in the novel. The result of this study reveals that the novel draws the portrayal of state control which functions as state apparatuses: ISA and RSA to maintain the dominance group as the representation of state apparatuses practices. The ISA operates in the community through training system as education, language rule and media cencorship as communication, committee’s rule as legal, and family’s role as Family. The RSA operates in the community through punishment system and release system as repressive forcement.
